A PERFECT BLEND OF ART AND LITERATURE BY SONAL PUROHIT

(Saju Nair - Dubai) One of the best things that has come out of this pandemic is the increase in growth of the creative industry. UAE is known for its vibrant culture and its ability to welcome and provide a home for 200+ nationalities. The diversity in this country is nothing short of commendable and the sense of acceptance and harmony shared by each individual is truly inspiring. The presence of various art galleries in the region has ensured that regular virtual events are taking place by collaborating with top tier artists while giving just as much importance to emerging artists. Ever since the intrusion of the COVID19 virus, physical gatherings were limited with several rules and regulations by the administration to ensure the safety of the citizens of the nation and to provide a healthy and safer environment. But, much to everyone's surprise, the art fraternity took these tables and completely turned them around, they have utilized this obstacle and turned it into an opportunity. Going off road from the traditional method of conducting exhibitions, galleries now host virtual events on platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet etc. and come up with creative themes and inspiring concepts. The success of these events can be justified extremely easily, all one needs to do is observe the exponential rise in participation by artists from across the globe!

The Paintbrush Art Community, one of the leading galleries in the UAE, has been conducting various virtual events and coming up with brilliant themes and concepts to encourage the community to rise to their potential. Their efforts have been applauded by huge masses and they have also gained immense popularity. The curator of TPBAC, Ms. Sonal Purohit and Founder, Dr. Romit Purohit, have given life to some of the most beautiful virtual gatherings of the year. 'THE HEARTISTS' was one such virtual event that was conducted through the Zoom platform on 20th November 2020. Deviating from the style of traditional art exhibitions, the curator has, this time, combined literature and art to give rise to a plethora of creativity just waiting to be unleashed in all its glory. The concept was derived and designed by Sonal Purohit who is a literature post-graduate herself as well as a well accomplished artist. "As an English post graduate and an artist, the concept of blending literature with poetry was always in my heart. This way I developed the idea of 'THE HEARTISTS' and I was lucky to receive the support from the amazing artists who helped me in making this little dream into reality." Says the curator Ms. Sonal Purohit

A total of 16 artists were segregated into 4 separate groups to breathe life into this event. The main idea behind this concept was to reach out to people, irrespective of their age groups, to motivate and educate them about the treasures of literature. In this era of technology, a majority of people have drifted away from the simple pleasure of reading and have instead indulged in tech based activities. Their lives revolve around the spectrum of advancing technology and while modernizing the world is essential for development, we should not forget the simple things in life that once brought untold happiness. Studies have shown a large number of individuals prefer watching movie adaptations of books rather than reading them firsthand. Literature has always been a subject of great fascination for most of us but ever since silver screens gained the supremacy as a prominent visual platform, the stories, concepts, presentations and many other key factors of drama took new dimensions. Even though there are incredibly talented authors worldwide, it has been observed that the number of readers are reducing leaving the importance of classic novels/poems/dramas in a wake of uncertainty. With this event, TPBAC has in fact stood for a cause and has taken the first step to bring back the original glory of drama and literature by merging it with the subject that have excelled in - ART. With a clear idea about the concept from the very beginning, the curator has ensured presenting some of the best promo videos which has indeed attracted many to come and enjoy the beauty of literature and art in the event titled 'THE HEARTISTS'.

This event was a tribute to the legends of literature namely William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Rabindranath Tagore and Sarojini Naidu. Four teams were formed for the four poets and every team had four artists who created their artworks based on the poems/ plays written by the author of their corresponding group. Most of the artworks created were related to plays from the classical authors listed above. Artists dressed up in line with their creations taking the show to a whole new level of splendor. Well known artist, Ms. Maya Mistry, grabbed the prize for the best dressed artist and the event was indeed successful in taking the viewers back to the classical era of art and literature. One of the most memorable presentations was from a young artist, Varsha Nair who enacted a very popular scene from Shakespeare's play, 'The Merchant of Venice' and created a spectacular artwork depicting the scene that was enacted. Every participating artist has completely immersed themselves in the assigned theme and they have come up with some of the best interpretations of classic literature in the form of art.
