(Saju Nair - Dubai) As virtual exhibitions gained immense popularity among the art industry, galleries across the globe are conducting several such gatherings that keeps the artists occupied even during this period of great difficulties brought about by the intrusion of a deadly pandemic.
Curators across the world have explored the opportunity to think out of the box and that resulted in organizing many interactive online gatherings related to art. It is very interesting and promising to understand that the participation was never limited to any specific subject but instead the participants were offered an array of creative topics to choose from, each more fascinating than the other. The support extended by beginners, emerging and professional artists have widened the scope of recognition for all galleries and has opened several golden doors that lead to newfound experiences and opportunities while maintaining high standards in terms of execution and overall composure.
Art galleries in the UAE are known for their excellence and their innovative thoughts and prominence in execution, as we have seen in several exhibitions throughout the years, ensures that some element of surprise is retained and it is this factor that makes each subsequent event unique gifting an enthralling experience for the artists and the art enthusiasts.
'The Faces' was a virtual exhibition hosted by ART4You Gallery, one among the prominent galleries in the UAE, on 22nd August 2020 and this was the fifth in the series of virtual exhibitions designed and presented by Ms. Jesno Jackson, curator and founder of ART4You Gallery. 'The Faces' was a collection of portraitures by renowned artists from across the globe. 90 Works from 41 artists of 22 nationalities has ornamented the walls of a virtual gallery that was designed and placed appropriately by Jenson Rengi, the creative designer of 'The Faces'. The portraits of rulers of The United Arab Emirates occupied the center stage creating a new dimension of realism, carefully brought to life using gentle and precise strokes with mediums like Oil and acrylic paints. Abstract, contemporary, paper works, nail and string arts, bottle caps and pop art versions of known and unknown figures stunned the art world as the innovations of the artists successfully managed to incorporate their creativity by relating to various aspects of nature and current social issues that has enhanced the beauty of their imagination manifold.
Normally portraitures are created in hyper realism and as innovative creators experimented with the classic style more and more, different branches of the said style came to be. Now we have different forms of abstract portraitures which are created whilst retaining the primary focus on the subject.
Portraiture has played a significant role before the invention of photography as portraiture carries centuries old legacy and was not limited to only a creation but also as a strong representation of an individual, that echoes its physical appearance, emotions and character in multiple mediums like painting, sculpture etc. through the brilliance of an artist. Even during the 20th century, when we are handy with all latest gadgets supported by modern technologies that can secure all your expressions and emotions with just a simple click, artists have never forgotten the age-old tradition of portraiture and the uniqueness attached to it.
'The Faces' the art exhibition by ART4You gallery was created with an aim to reveal the past, experience the present and to preserve for the future and has acclaimed immense appreciation from the art world. The artworks were beautifully arranged in four separate zones as per the nature of the creation in an online platform hosted by artsteps virtual gallery and that justifies the professional curating capabilities of the gallery.
To ensure utmost comfortability to the virtual visitors and to have the continuity on their viewing experience 90 artworks presented in 'The Faces' were segregated into four segments. Zone 1 labelled as 'Portrait of Rulers' displayed magnificently crafted 20 portraiture of rulers of UAE. Zone 2 titled 'Portrait of Realism' gifted the art world an opportunity to experience 31 splendid figures of known and unknown faces. Zone 3 labelled as 'Portrait of Difference' showcased 22 artworks that has indeed reflected the inspiring creativity of astoundingly talented artists while Zone 4 labelled as 'Portrait of Expression' displayed 17 artworks that highlights the various expressions and emotions from the perspective of an artist. All of the artworks chosen by the curator has ensured the highest standards and when the artist explained the stories and factors that has influenced them to create the artworks the gathering realized the works were not just pieces of art but they held a life force within them, a force that was able to converse with its spectator.
'The Faces' was inaugurated by Ms. Sultana Kazim, renowned artist, fashion designer and Representative and Co coordinator of Museum of Americas. During the inaugural address, Ms. Sultana expressed her views on Portraiture and explained the significant importance of this art form in ancient days before the invention of photography where portraiture was an inevitable factor in diplomatic and family affairs. The special guest of the event and renowned curator, Art Critic and founder of artforumuae and associated institutions related to art, Mr. Peter Gressman was indeed convinced with the wide range of collections displayed at 'The Faces'. He mentioned his views on his post event report on social Medias and he states "A painting style that requires a lot of fingertip feeling, a good eye for proportions, a good technique, and a sense of natural colors, at least in photo-realistic painting. However, the subject of faces leaves a lot of leeway in the artist's imagination and the 41 artists of the exhibition "The Faces" used this imagination. Besides a large section of Portraits by the Emirates Rulers, you can discover Portraits of known and unknown people in nearly all art styles like contemporary, abstract, digital, cubism, romanticism, antique, photorealism, street art, and pop art, but also unusual styles like in paper cut, nailing works and stitching works. Portrait painting is a genre of painting whose object is the depiction of a person. Here we have witnessed a wide range of collection and each of the works done by the artists is the best in their overall composure. Congratulations to the gallery and all participating artists for organizing a great show."
"It is such a pleasure for me to be part of this phenomenal virtual exhibition curated by Jesno and as always ART4You has once again displayed their exemplary capabilities in hosting such events. Portraitures has always been a subject of interest for me as the magnitude of focus required to create the artworks was not only a subject for an artist but also a huge responsibility to maintain the accuracy of the subject. As an artist, I have been working on portraitures and it is always a great feeling for me as a citizen of this great nation when I paint the rulers of UAE. I try to express my patriotism, love and affection to my country through my paintings that gives me immense satisfaction as an artist and as a citizen. I am always keen to have some uniqueness in my works and for that reason I have explored various opportunities on the technicalities without altering the fundamentals. I started working on pop art with selected color palettes and I am happy that those works are accepted by the art industry, and then onwards I have created works that expresses innocent emotions with a mission to spread a contagious smile and positive vibes when visitors view my artworks. I am also fortunate to be part of this exhibition, it was also an opportunity for me to experience beautiful works and this will help me to keep experimenting on the subject enabling me to take an extra mile to create more of portraitures with a difference in future." Says Mr. Ahmed Rukni, Special guest and one among the participating artist in 'The Faces'.
"A Portrait is a representation of a particular person that is a very old art form going back at least to ancient Egypt, where it flourished about 5000 years ago. Before the invention of photography, a painted, sculpted, or drawn portrait was the only way to record the appearance of someone. But portraits have always been more than just a record. They have always used to express the power, importance, virtue, beauty, wealth, taste, learning or other qualities of the sitter. Portraits have always been flattering and painters who refused to flatter, tended to find their work rejected. Among leading modern artists portrait painting on commission that is to order, became increasingly rare. Since 1990's artists have also used video to create living portraits even then portrait painting continued to flourish. This exhibition in the virtual gallery displays artworks of 41 artists from veterans to upcoming artists. Straying away from the orthodox definition of a portrait art has been the theme of this exhibition by which we try to bring together the work of different genres. We wanted to bring portrait artworks to the forefront, as they are the kind of work that is not as recognized. We have included 90 artworks in this virtual show that includes various subjects and styles. While you travel through the gallery you will notice that the themes and styles in this event clearly justifies that the portraits allows for a breadth of expressiveness, a scrutiny of the person, and the occasion to connect with those around us." Says curator Ms. Jesno Jackson.
