In conjunction with the premiere of Sisters, - a programme of the two one-act operas Suor Angelica by Puccini and Catharina Backman's On the Other Side of the Sea - Malmö Opera director Michael Bojesen announced that Patrik Ringborg has been appointed as the opera house's principal guest conductor for the coming three years.
"Patrik Ringborg is a consummate conductor and one of Sweden's greatest musical talents. He has a unique overview and can deal with newly written works such as Schlagt sie tot! with the same sharp nuance and rhythm that he brings to bear on classics such as Suor Angelica. He is equally respected by the choir and the orchestra and his continued work with us will further raise the already high musical quality of both," comments Bojesen.
"I am delighted to be able to intensify my collaboration with Malmö Opera's choir and orchestra. The opera choir is capable of great deeds of musicality and stagecraft, while the opera orchestra's tonal flexibility and receptiveness to new ideas make every new production a joy. I am particularly looking forward to the varied repertoire - from the most played works to new twenty-first century Swedish operas," enthuses Ringborg.
Patrik Ringborg is one of Sweden's most in-demand conductors internationally, with a wealth of concert experience and an opera repertoire that encompasses 90 works. Between 2007 and 2017, he was musical director of Staatstheater Kassel, where in addition to well over 150 concerts he led 27 new opera productions.
Among other appointments, Ringborg has guested at the Semperoper in Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, Volksoper Wien and the Norwegian National Opera. After debuting with Tannhäuser at the Göteborg Opera in 1998, Patrik was appointed principal guest conductor; since then, he has gone on to conduct all of the Göteborg Opera's productions of Wagner and is a regularly returning guest.
Among his previous notable original productions are Hans Gefors' Notorious at the Göteborg Opera in 2015 and Daniel Börtz' Medea at the Royal Swedish Opera in 2016. He was awarded national newspaper Svenska Dagbladet's Opera Prize in 2014 for Parsifal and Das Rheingold. Patrik Ringborg is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
At Malmö Opera, Patrik has previously conducted Der Park, Schlagt sie tot!, Autumn Sonata and a number of concerts. During the 2021/22 season he will conduct Sisters and in 2022/23 Romeo and Juliet and The Makropulos Affair.
